An Escape from New York video game could be in the works as concept art surfaces

While we’re still waiting to start collecting John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando achievements, it appears there is another video game in development based on the legendary director’s works: Escape from New York. More than 30 images have appeared online showing what looks like a video game adaptation of Escape from New York, which includes Kurt Russell’s likeness. As reported by Insider Gaming, 37 concept art and blueprint images have been uploaded to Imgur that seemingly point to an unannounced Escape from New York game, although they appear to have originally been posted by Slipgate Ironworks’ art director Eric Arroyo on ArtStation. There aren’t any details pertaining to the game, which is supposedly in development at Graven developer Slipgate Ironworks, but various enemy types are featured along with one piece of concept art that looks to be portraying three hero characters circled by a horde of ‘Crazies’ — could we be seeing a new co-op contender for a spot in our list of the best first-person shooters on Xbox? Slipgate’s website says it has an upcoming title to announce, so hopefully we’ll learn more later this year. After the president’s plane, Air Force One, is hijacked and deliberately crashed into the island, ex-soldier and federal prisoner Snake Plissken, played by Kurt Russell, is given 24 hours to fight his what through the prison to find and rescue the President. It’s a fantastic movie and one I’d love to see turned into a video game. While I certainly enjoy co-op shooters and asymmetrical multiplayer games — genres with an abundance of film adaptions at this point — I’d much prefer to play as Snake in a single-player story-driven game; I wouldn’t say no to a co-op partner joining me for the ride though! Of course, while I hope an Escape from New York game is in development, I’d also suggest you take this with a pinch of salt. Seeing as the images appear to come from a Slipgate developer who would likely have signed a non-disclosure agreement, these could be part of a pitch that was ultimately shot down or cancelled while in development. Everything we know about Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 from Saber Interactive points to the game dropping multiplayer for a co-op story-driven experience. Irongate Softworks joined Saber back in 2021, so here’s hoping the Escape from New York team takes the same approach as their colleagues.
