During yesterday’s special Official Xbox Podcast episode, which saw Phil Spencer, Sarah Bond, and Matt Booty discuss the future of Xbox, Microsoft revealed new Xbox Game Pass subscriber numbers. The update revealed that Microsoft is launching four first-party games on rival platforms, Diablo 4 is joining Xbox Game Pass next month, the next Xbox generation will the “largest technical leap” we’ve ever seen, and Phil Spencer said that players should have “confidence” in building a digital library on Xbox. We also got our first update on Xbox Game Pass subscribers in quite a while. When announcing that Diablo 4 will join Game Pass next month, president of Xbox Sarah Bond said: “Now the 34 million Game Pass members can all enjoy the fantastic experience of Diablo 4.” Unfortunately, that’s not quite true, as Microsoft has confirmed that the 34 million subscribers count also includes players in the Xbox Game Pass Core tier, which is effectively Xbox Live Gold and doesn’t include the full Game Pass library.”The 34 million Game Pass membership number is accurate,” Xbox’s head of communications Kari Perez told The Verge. “Diablo IV is coming to Xbox Game Pass on March 28th, with the exception of the Xbox Game Pass Core catalog.”The last time Microsoft revealed Xbox Game Pass subscriber numbers was in January 2022, when its total number of subscribers surpassed 25 million. Xbox Game Pass Core replaced Xbox Live Gold in September 2023 as the base subscription players need to play games online on Xbox. The changeover means that the Games with Gold program has been retired, but instead, subscribers can access a selection of 32 Xbox Game Pass titles as part of their subscription — 34 now with the addition of Chivalry 2 and Totally Reliable Delivery Service.
