Alongside the Nikon Z9 and new lens announcements (Nikkor Z 24-120mm f/4 S, Nikkor Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S, updated Z lens roadmap and new FTZ II adapter), Nikon announced a pair of new apps, NX MobileAir and NX Tether.
NX MobileAir is an Android and iOS app that lets photographers tether a compatible Nikon camera to their smartphone for fast FTP uploads over 4G or 5G cellular connections. The pro-oriented app allows you to manage FTP server info, perform simple edits, enter IPTC data and add voice memos.

Imagine you’re a photojournalist or sports photographer out in the field, whether you have Wi-Fi or not, you can still transfer photos to a centralized location using just your camera, smartphone and a cellular connection. There’s no need for a computer or a separate wireless transmitter.
Within the NX MobileAir app, users can record voice memos for individual images, add IPTC data with speech-to-text, crop and straighten photos, easily browse photos and make selections for upload or deletion, and upload images individually or as a batch.

The NX MobileAir app lets users record voice memos, make basic edits, perform culling, upload photos and even add IPTC data with speech-to-text.

NX MobileAir is compatible with the Nikon Z9 on iOS and the Z 9, Z 7II, Z 6II, Z 50, D6 and D5 on Android. On Android, a compatible USB Type C cable is required. On iOS devices, you must use the Anker 514 Lightning to USB-C accessory cable. The app is not yet available, although it is coming soon to the App Store and Google Play. A free version will allow users to handle a single album and up to 999 images. A paid version will be available for $4.99 per month and includes unlimited albums and images.
NX Tether is a streamlined tethered shooting utility. When using NX Tether, images are transferred to a connected computer in real-time. You can use the utility to collaborate with production teams and clients. You can also import shots into your preferred photo editor.

When using NX Tether, you can make real-time adjustments to key camera settings and the in-app camera controls are consistent with recent Nikon cameras. NX Tether fits into the existing Nikon software ecosystem and can collaborate with NX Studio, Nikon Image Space, Nikon Picture Control Utility 2 and more. NX Tether can also be used wirelessly with compatible cameras.
NX Tether is free and works on Windows (8.1 and 10) and macOS (10.14, 10.15 and 11). The Nikon Z9 has a built-in wireless transmitter. The Nikon Z7, Z7 II, Z6, Z6 II, Z5, Z fc, Z50 and D780 use the optional WT-7 wireless transmitter. The Nikon D6 is compatible too and uses the optional WT-6 or WT-5 wireless transmitters.
