The TrueAchievements Game of the Year 2023 vote is here. We’ve brought together 32 of the best Xbox games of the past year in a single elimination tournament that will be decided by you.Round 4 of Game of the Year 2023 sees third-person mech shooter Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon take on the beautiful puzzle game Cocoon. This round features another unlikely pairing to keep things interesting, with Armored Core VI offering up challenging gameplay as huge mechs blast each other to bits, while Cocoon takes us on a much more relaxed adventure in a beautiful world. It’s from the lead designer of Limbo and Inside, which should already tell you that it’s a GOTY contender.We’ve split the field into two seeding brackets, with all the major AAA releases going into the top bracket, while small titles and indies go into the second tier. This should prevent two serious contenders from smashing into each other in the first round, while still giving smaller titles the chance to stage an upset.Oh, and we should address the elephant in the room… Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s not out on Xbox yet, but we know it’s going to be launching in December. If it releases before the end of the first round of knockouts, we’ll turn the final match into a three-way battle. Just picture Baldur’s Gate 3 running in with the Money in the Bank briefcase.Other bookkeeping. We’ve allowed remakes, but not remasters — Resident Evil 4 is going to be a lot of people’s GOTY vote and it felt unfair to kick it out. Nothing in early access makes the field though — a game must have had a full release since we last did this vote to be eligible. And don’t worry… there will still be a more traditional GOTY Awards vote later in the month.It’s hard to predict which of these games will be crowned the winner. Armored Core VI: Fire of Rubicon has been praised a ton since its launch earlier this year, but despite FromSoftware’s popularity, the difficulty of its games can put a lot of players off. Cocoon is a little easier to relax with, and also has the benefit of being included on Xbox Game Pass, so it has a much larger pool of players to draw from.
