GTA 6 trailer announcement is already meme fodder

We’re still days away from the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, but even the announcement of the trailer is causing a firestorm on social media. It makes sense: GTA 6 is one of the most anticipated games of the decade. To stay busy until the trailer drops on Dec. 5, everyone’s making jokes.

Even game studios as big as Microsoft are getting in on it, using the GTA 6 announcement format to announce their own trailers. The Fall Guys team, too, has a new trailer coming next week. We’ve reached out to both Microsoft and Epic Games to confirm they’ve actually got trailers coming, but our guess is yes — and that the GTA 6 announcement was a timely, buzzy thing to play off of.

Elsewhere on social media, eager fans are digging into the GTA 6 poster for any hints as to what’s to come. Mostly, it’s speculation on the third birds. Three birds equals three characters? And then there’s the jokes about the people analyzing the poster — and the current state of video game remasters.

If you’re looking for industry jokes, we’ve got those too. With Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards coming on Dec. 7, there are plenty of people talking about how Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 trailer could distract from Keighley’s world premieres.

But most of the hype is simply from people excited about the first trailer, given how long it’s been since Grand Theft Auto 5, which Rockstar released in 2013. It can’t be understated how anticipated the GTA 5 follow-up is; the decade-old game is one of the most successful games of all time. Rockstar Games has sold 185 million copies of Grand Theft Auto 5. Lots of people still play it and its online component, GTA Online. Within the past 24 hours, the peak player count — for both GTA 5 and GTA Online combined — was 148,181.

GTA Online regularly receives updates from Rockstar. The open-world multiplayer game is the ultimate sandbox, letting players do everything from attack each other and race cars to roleplay as a driving instructor and gamble in a casino.
