It’s almost time — our wait for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox is almost over. The holdup for Xbox has been due to trouble optimising particularly on Xbox Series S, but it’s good news all-round — we get the game on Xbox some time in December, while all that optimisation work means improved performance is on the way for PS5 and PC.While talking about Patch 5, an absolute beast of an update that Larian Studios has been busy hyping for some time now, Larian Studios’ director of publishing Michael Douse touched on what the work on Xbox means for other platforms. “Performance improvements are coming to both PC and PS5 on behalf of all the work that’s gone into optimising for Xbox,” Douse says. Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke earlier suggested the Xbox Series S version of Baldur’s Gate III might benefit all platforms, and it’s interesting to see what this means for the game now. Intriguingly, Douse adds, “that’s exciting, but also maybe the least exciting thing in Patch 5, to give you an idea of how exciting it is.”It’s been a long road for Baldur’s Gate 3 to come to Xbox. Larian Studios first discussed an Xbox version of the game back in February but said they weren’t “confident enough” to announce it because of technical issues with split-screen co-op. Split-screen co-op would prove to be a thorn in their side, with the team first explaining that Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox may require “compromises” due to Series S before confirming that the game would come to Xbox in 2023, but without split-screen on Series S.
