With Alan Wake II now out on Xbox Series X|S and looking like a solid contender for Game of the Year, Remedy Entertainment is focusing on its other upcoming game. One of the projects, codename Vanguard, which was a free-to-play title, will now be rebooted as a premium title under the new codename of Kestral, a shooter with a strong focus on co-op multiplayer.Remedy has said that Vanguard has come to the end of its proof-of-concept stage after being announced in 2021. However, due to “uncertainties in creating a successful game to the rapidly changing free-to-play market and associated risks,” the studio and its publishing partner, Tencent, have decided to take the project in a new direction. The project will now be developed under the codename of Kestral and is returning to a concept stage as the companies decide where to go with it. So far, Kestral is said to be a premium game featuring a “strong cooperative multiplayer component,” and will leverage “Remedy’s core strengths and be built on many of the features, assets and themes already designed for Vanguard.”“We have made some great strides in free-to-play and multiplayer development in Vanguard. After a lot of careful consideration, we believe that taking on a new direction where the game will be built more around Remedy’s core competences is the right way to go,” Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala said. “We are creating another distinct Remedy game with Tencent’s continued support in making a great cooperative multiplayer experience.”With the change in direction, the core leadership and select members of the Vanguard team will stay on to conceptualize Kestral, while the rest of the team will move over to Remedy’s other projects. So far, Remedy has announced that it is working on Control 2, a Control multiplayer spin-off game under the codename Condor, and remakes of both Max Payne games.
