According to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, the company is focusing on “transforming” its bigger franchises, and wants them to include, among other things, more live service elements.Zaslav spoke in a recent earnings call (thanks, Eurogamer). Zaslav says the company’s research shows Gen Z and Gen Alpha “prefer gaming to any other form of entertainment” and that games will be “even more important to our fans in the future,” before highlighting some of its biggest franchises, such as Harry Potter and Mortal Kombat. “Our focus is on transforming our biggest franchises from largely console and PC based with three-four year release schedules to include more always on gameplay through live services, multiplatform and free-to-play extensions with the goal to have more players spending more time on more platforms,” Zaslav continues. “Ultimately we want to drive engagement and monetization of longer cycles and at higher levels. We have put specific capabilities. We are currently under scale and see significant opportunity to generate greater post purchase revenue.Interestingly, reports emerged earlier this year that Warner Bros was delaying Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League following a lot of negativity towards the game’s live service elements. The following month, Rocksteady officially pushed the game back into 2024. The reason given at the time was that it was focusing on “getting the game to be the best quality experience for players,” but the fact remains that many had previously criticised its live-service aspects following the reveal of several new trailers diving into the game’s post-launch content plans. We’ll keep an eye out for more word from Warner Bros on their future plans.
