Bleakness and the cyberpunk genre go together like gothic novels and corsets. They really go hand in hand. SANABI: The Revenant just graduated from Steam Early Access, and we dive into another deliciously dark and tragic cityscape.
In SANABI: The Revenant, you take on the role of a very dangerous individual. You’ve seen many conflicts in your lifetime, and it’s time to unretire yourself for one final mission.
You must travel to the corrupt, dystopian city of MAGO, ruled by the most heartless corporate suits, and find a mysterious being known only as SANABI.
Pixel Art But With Lofty Ambitions
We could forgive you for a touch of pixel art fatigue. Heavily used, sometimes just works as a way for devs with not many resources to make something that looks serviceable. So please don’t take it as faint praise when we say that SANABI: The Revenant looks absolutely stunning.
The game leverages the pixel art style to create a world not only filled with meticulous detail but with an epic sense of scale. Packed high-rise blocks littered with neon signs, the packed and opulent rooms of the rich and powerful, huge robotics moving in the background. It’s a treat for the eyes.
Grapple With The Heartless City
At its core, the game is an action platformer. It makes use of the protagonist’s special prosthetic arm, which can shoot a grappling hook that grips onto surfaces.
You’ll definitely need that. MAGO is full of danger. From the scum of the street to the dogs of the corporate overlords, you’ll be hunted wherever you go.
Even then, you’re not without friends in the metropolis. The veteran has Mari, a hacking prodigy whose bubbly nature contrasts the bleakness of the city. She can use her technological knowhow to provide backup for your operation.. but maybe having another you care for will be a chink in your armor.
If gritty future cities are right up your alley, take a look at SANABI: The Revenant now on Steam and Nintendo Switch.
