Following a tough week for the teams at Destiny 2 developer Bungie, the studio has published a letter to fans, admitting that it has “lost a lot of your trust,” and acknowledged the feedback it has received about the game’s recent season and the Lightfall expansion.Earlier this week, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons confirmed that the studio has laid off a number of staff, following the likes of Microsoft, BioWare, CD Projekt Red, and more this year. A Bloomberg report also suggested that the next Destiny 2 expansion, The Final Shape, has been pushed back into February 2024, and the company’s new Marathon game has been pushed into 2025. Although the recent letter Bungie has published to fans doesn’t confirm if The Final Shape has been delayed or not, it certainly sounds like it. “This has been one of the most difficult weeks in our studio’s history, as we’ve parted ways with people we respect and admire. We’ve spent this week supporting one another, including those who are at the studio, as well as friends and colleagues who no longer are,” the letter, titled ‘Our Path Forward’ says. “We want to acknowledge the feedback and concerns you have about Lightfall and recent Seasons, as well as your responses to the reveal of The Final Shape. We know we have lost a lot of your trust. Destiny needs to surprise and delight. We haven’t done this enough and that’s going to change.”According to Bungie, the Destiny 2 team consisting of more than 650 developers is “pouring all their energy and expertise” into The Final Shape expansion as it strives to create an “unforgettable Destiny experience.” Bungie says that it wants its upcoming expansion to be “something that will be regarded alongside the best games we’ve ever made — a fitting culmination that honors the journey we’ve been on together for the past ten years.”Although the developer doesn’t specifically say that The Final Shape will arrive sometime next year, we can expect to hear about what’s on the “short-term horizon” in the coming weeks. The next season will begin in late November, followed by Bungie beginning to “unpack our team’s bigger, bolder, and brighter vision for The Final Shape, as well as the bridge we plan to build to take us all out of this Darkness and into the Light.”
