Annoying Xbox popup ads enter overload for Call of Duty Modern Warfare III

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III launches on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One later this month, and on the off-chance you haven’t heard about it yet, Microsoft has started shoving an advertisement in the faces of Xbox users when they load up their consoles. We’ve seen these kinds of fullscreen advertisements appear before for Starfield and Forza Motorsport, and while Call of Duty is now a Microsoft-owned IP, the fact that it’s not included in Xbox Game Pass makes a fullscreen popup feel a little more outrageous. As shared by The Verge’s Tom Warren on X, some users have started seeing popups for Activision’s upcoming game when they load up their Xbox consoles, urging them to “Fight against the ultimate threat.” A thread on Reddit sees some players referring to the new ad campaign as “vomit-inducing,” while others feel Microsoft is putting its recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard to good use. With Microsoft using similar tactics for three games in recent months, it’s looking like we might be having to put up with a popup like this more often — let’s hope the company doesn’t decide to rent the space out to third-party developers, though. For me, I’m happy to spare a couple of tiles on my home page for advertisements, Microsoft has a business to run after all, but a fullscreen popup feels a bit much for my liking. Players subscribing to Xbox Game Pass and Ultimate are paying a premium for the service already and shouldn’t have to be bombarded with ads when loading their consoles. For unsubscribed users, it’s a little more understandable, but there needs to be a limit for paying customers. This isn’t the only controversial move Activision has made this week, as the new Call of Duty HQ that houses the Modern Warfare games has caused havoc with the achievement lists.
