In an interview promoting his new comic book series, Scrapper, prominent Gears of War developer Cliff Bleszinski spoke about the Xbox franchise and his belief that it “needs a little bit of a reboot,” and that Zack Snyder would be a “great fit” for a movie adaption. When speaking to Comicbook, Bleszinski was asked if he could see himself returning to something gritty like a Gears of War comic book after Scrapper (which is about a superhero dog). While the developer didn’t say if he would want to do a comic series or not, he did say he would happily consult on a potential Gears reboot if it were to happen. “I believe Gears needs a little bit of a reboot, like God of War had, and I’ve always said, Phil Spencer has my number, I’m happy to consult,” Bleszinski said. “Gears will always be near and dear to my heart.””It really did feel like a golden era. It’s like PlayStation 2 in its heyday with God of War and everything else,” Bleszinksi later added when discussing the time Xbox had the likes of Gears of War 3, Halo Reach, and Alan Wake all doing well. “Everybody’s trying to move to games as services these days, and Phil Spencer’s trying to become the Netflix of video games with Game Pass. I get that, I respect it, but honestly, I’m not playing shit these days. I am basically reading books and comic books.”Bleszinski then goes on to say that after a few mimosas, he’s partial to looking up Gears of War cutscenes on YouTube to read the comments, comparing the feeling of seeing players comments about Dom’s death to the Doctor Who scene where Vincent Van Gogh travels through the Tardis to an art gallery in the future. “Every time I watch that scene, man, I just get totally fu**ing misty-eyed because, yeah, I like money. Who doesn’t? I like to eat prime rib steak and sushi sometimes, but you just want to know that your work makes an impact,” Bleszinski said. “Reading the comments on those cut scenes from Gears of War when Dom dies, people are like, “I had to put the controller down, my friend and I just sat there silenced and stunned.” For people to actually get tattoos of something that you made on their bodies is the most flattering thing.”When asked about the potential of Zack Snyder making a movie adaption of Gears of War, Bleszinski said that he thinks “Zack Snyder is an amazing director ” — even if he does think Army of the Dead was terrible — “But his fans are rabid as hell and the thing is, I think he’d be a great fit for it.”It also seems like Bleszinski agrees with the majority of us and thinks Dave Batista would be the perfect actor to play Marcus Fenix in the movie. “I used to say back in the day, that I didn’t want a big wrestler to play Marcus Fenix. And then I had the epiphany of years back, wrestlers are not only athletes, they’re actors,” Bleszinski said. “Dave Bautista man, the dude dressed up in Gears armor online. He’s proven his range from the last Blade Runner movie through to him playing Drax The Destroyer and all that. In the Knock at the Cabin, he’s got great range. I think he’d be perfect for it. He’s got the body type and once again, I’m happy to give my two cents and consult, but the biggest thing I hope for is that it has heart.”Last year, Netflix revealed that it had partnered with The Coalition for two Gears of War projects in the form of a live-action feature film and animated series, “with the potential for more.” The announcement was then followed by Dave Batista posting some clips of him promoting Gears 5 as Marcus Fenix, saying “I can’t make this any easier.” We don’t know about you, but we think the wrestler would be an awesome choice for the part. Fingers crossed that Netflix and The Coalition feel the same way!
