San Francisco Giants third baseman Evan Longoria left Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs after colliding with teammate Brandon Crawford.

The San Francisco Giants are enjoying some early success in the 2021 season, as they sit atop the NL West standings. Additionally, the team had won the first two games of their four-game set against the visiting Chicago Cubs. While they did emerge victorious on Saturday, the Giants did not leave unscathed, unfortunately.

With the Giants leading 4-2 in the top of the ninth inning, Cubs first baseman knocked in third baseman Kris Bryant on a fielders choice. That occurred because Giants third baseman Evan Longoria collided with shortstop Brandon Crawford when trying to field Rizzo’s ground ball. Longoria laid down on the field in pain after taking the brunt of the impact to his left shoulder, before ultimately leaving the game.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that Longoria injured his shoulder/collarbone area, but is getting looked at by the team, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com.

San Francisco held on to win the game 4-3 after pitcher Tyler Rogers struck out Cubs catcher Willson Contreras and forced outfielder Jason Heyward to ground out to close out the top of the ninth.

Through 50 games this season, Longoria is slashing .280/.376/.516 while recording nine home runs, 30 RBI, 28 runs scored and 45 hits.

While Giants fans are probably happy that the team has officially won their series against the Cubs, they will no doubt be nervously refreshing their Twitter feeds in the coming hours, waiting for an exact injury diagnosis on Longoria.
