Skyrim lead designer Bruce Nesmith says he shares Todd Howard’s opinion about the video game industry having “short memories” and that it’s best to start talking about games closer to release, saying Bethesda confirmed Elder Scrolls 6 earlier because “the pitchforks and torches were out.”Nesmith discussed his time at Bethesda, his thoughts on recent titles like Starfield, and more, during a MinnMax interview. It was while discussing picking where Bethesda would head with the Elder Scrolls series next that Nesmith touched on the early announcement of The Elder Scrolls 6.”You have to remember the company took years of hits for not talking about Elder Scrolls 6… I mean years of hits, because Todd’s opinion, one which I share by the way, is that the video game industry has short memories,” Nesmith says. “Those companies that start touting their games years ahead of time actually, you know, they screw themselves. The best time to start talking about it is six months before release… So only the fact that everybody was… you know, the pitchforks and torches were out. It was what got Todd to say, ‘yes we are going to do Elder Scrolls 6, I promise you, it’s for real, it’ll happen.’ But I’m betting you won’t hear much in the way of details until a good six months before release. Which is the way it should be. I think that’s the best approach. He’s proven that that works really well, at least for Bethesda.”The Elder Scrolls 6 was officially announced back in 2018. In 2021, we heard it was still in the design phase, and it wasn’t until just a few months ago that we heard that The Elder Scrolls 6 is now in early development. It’s still going to be a wait, however, as Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently commented that The Elder Scrolls 6 won’t launch on Xbox until 2028 at the earliest.Skyrim itself has long been included on our list of the best Game Pass games, so there’s a good chance The Elder Scrolls 6 will be more than worth the wait.
