If you are too close to the edge of the platform, the explosion can knock you off down below. The drop damage is minimal but there’s a very good chance you will aggro additional enemies from the lower levels.
Once you’ve found Master Smith McCoy simply take him out to complete the Blacksmith Betrayer quest.
