The fourth member of the V29 family is here – the vivo V29 Pro stands above the vanilla vivo V29 with an additional camera and a faster chipset. This is also an upgrade over the V27 Pro from earlier this year.
What the V29 Pro has that neither of its siblings has, in fact, no other V-phone has ever had it, is the 12MP portrait camera. It has a 2x zoom lens that can focus on subjects at 0.5m to 2m away (1.6-6.5ft). The Sony IMX663 sensor has “all-pixel dual-core” autofocus, which helps it in the dark.
The main camera is the same as on the V29 and V27 Pro, a 50MP IMX766 sensor (1/1.56”) behind an f/1.9 lens with OIS. The ultrawide camera is the same too, an 8MP module. There used to be a 2MP depth sensor here as well, but the Pro skips that in favor of the portrait camera.
The Smart Aura Light is still on board, a ring-shaped LED flash (15.6mm in diameter) that is 36% brighter than the previous generation. This flash adjusts its color temperature according to ambient light.
Typical for the V-series, there is an impressive selfie camera on board a 50MP module with a fairly wide 92° lens with autofocus. And not just autofocus, but Eye AF that ensures your face is always in focus.
On to the other upgrade. If we’re comparing the Pro to the regular V29, then this is the Dimensity 8200 chipset that brings higher performance than the Snapdragon 778G (especially in the GPU department). If we’re comparing to the V27 Pro instead (which also uses the D8200 chip), then the upgrade is to the charging – the same 4,600mAh capacity is now topped at 80W (up from 66W on the V27 Pro, the V29 also does 80W).
Going back to the front, the curved 6.78” display is similar to the rest of the V29 series. This one in particular is an AMOLED panel with 1,260 x 2,800px resolution. It runs at 120Hz refresh rate and can offer instantaneous touch sampling rate of 1,000Hz. It peaks at 1,300 nits with 2,160Hz high frequency PWM dimming (with 16,000 brightness levels). In terms of image quality, this is a 10-bit display with 100% DCI-P3 coverage and an HDR10+ certification.
The Pro is fairly slender at 7.46mm. The front glass curves at 55°, leaving only 2.4mm of frame on the side. The rear panel is also made of glass. The V29 Pro is produced in India, by the way.
vivo painted the V29 Pro in two colors. The first, Himalayan Blue uses nano-scale magnetic particles that add glitter to the light blue paint and evoke the cloudy mountainscapes of the Himalayas. The other option is a fairly standard Space Black.
