According to an internal chat log filed during the ongoing court case between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission, Microsoft’s leadership has considered launching a new Xbox in 2028, which could be another multi-model console generation.Microsoft has entertained the idea of starting a new Xbox console generation in 2028As reported by Axios, a chat log from an internal meeting in May 2022 between a number of Microsoft executives, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, head of gaming Phil Spencer, CFO Amy Hood, and more, reveals that Microsoft considered launching a new Xbox sometime in 2028. The company had previously eluded to the arrival of a new Xbox in 2028 back in June, but this is the first time we’ve seen evidence of the company actively discussing it. According to the log, the executives were asked if the next Xbox console would steer away from the traditional fixed hardware we’ve seen consoles offer to date. “We have already started this journey with Xbox One and Xbox One X, furthering it in Series X|S,” corporate vice president of gaming ecosystems Kevin Gammill said, later adding: “We need to be even more flexible going forward with gen 10, but also provide the ability for creators to take advantage of unique hardware capabilities.”During a different part of the chat, corporate vice president of immersive experiences Anuj Gosalia praised the Game Development Kit, and said: “One of the things consoles have been really great at is giving a very clear platform target for developers.”Whether or not Microsoft is still planning to roll out new Xbox hardware in 2028 is yet to be confirmed, but the chat does reveal that we can potentially expect another generation of consoles featuring varying hardware.Earlier this year, in response to the struggles Larian Studios had with getting Baldur’s Gate 3’s split-screen gameplay to work on the Xbox Series S, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that he “doesn’t see a world where we drop the S.”If 2028 is the target year for the next generation of Xbox consoles, it means we’ve got a fair distance to go before we’re able to upgrade. We’re already seeing the odd issue arise when running newer games on the Xbox Series X|S consoles — the majority of issues have affected the S, admittedly — and they’re only three years old. Looking at this roadmap, they could be around eight years old by the time we can use upgraded hardware, so without a mid-gen refresh, it could be a long road indeed.
