In a Nintendo Direct event held on August 31, 2023, especially for the upcoming game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a lot of new information about the gameplay has been revealed. Not only has gameplay information been revealed, but so has been a new device. A new limited edition Mario-themed Red Nintendo Switch OLED is also coming out ahead of the game to celebrate it. The Direct event was aired for a total of 15 minutes where a presentation was shown in light of the game. During the presentation, Nintendo revealed the roster lineup, new power-ups, stages, online mode, the setting of the game and more. Starting with the roster lineup, it is given as follows:

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Peach
  • Yellow Toad
  • Blue Toad
  • Daisy
  • Toadette
  • Yoshi
  • Red Yoshi
  • Light Blue Yoshi
  • Yellow Yoshi
  • Nabbit

Nintendo also specifically mentioned that from the lineup, Yoshi and Nabbit are characters that can not take damage. They also can not be transformed by power-ups as this was designed for younger players. As for the game’s setting, it takes place in the Flower Kingdom, which is a “not-so-distant land” that is just beyond the Mushroom Kingdom, as explained in the Direct presentation. The ruler of this Flower Kingdom is Prince Florian, who is also the guardian of the Wonder Flower. Unfortunately, Bowser soon gets his hand on the Wonder Flower and now it is up to Mario and his crew including Luigi, Daisy, Peach and Toad to catch Bowser and stop him.

Moving on to the stages, the Flower Kingdom has been divided into 7 parts or different worlds, which include different stages unique to each of them. The most interesting part is, unlike previous Mario games, players can take on these stages in whichever order they want according to their liking. Some things included in the stages are the Wonder Flower, which upon touching will create Wonder Effects like massive bubbles, send the player floating through space randomly and huge pipes. The game also offers multiplayer facilities like online and local co-op mode with up to 4 players where they can resurrect defeated players. Players can also play with friends via friend’s rooms.

In the friend’s room, they can see what stage their friends are competing on. They can also initiate a race and compete with their friends to see who can complete the stage the fastest. There are also different perks that allow the players to play the game without much difficulty if they choose to do so. A new badge system has also been introduced where players can unlock different abilities ranging from non-stop dashes to supercharged jump boosts. As for the power-ups, three new ones have been added to the game and they are as follows:

  • Elephant Mario Ability: Gives a player the ability to smash through obstacles with its trunk. The elephant trunk can also store and shoot water at will.
  • The Drill Power-up: Gives a player the ability to burrow below obstacles to avoid them. It also protects the player from enemies that drop in from above.
  • The Bubble Ability: Gives a player the ability to shoot bubbles at will. They can also jump on those bubbles and reach platforms that are far away and coins.

Needless to say, the amount of new gameplay features added to the game is sure to make it an amazing experience for players of all ages. The roster line-up is also amazing with the variety and the design for the younger players is genius. The only unsolved mystery so far that Nintendo has not revealed is who will be doing Mario’s voice. This is a mystery because earlier this month, it was revealed that longtime Mario voice actor, Charles Martinet was stepping down from his role. That same announcement also talked about a video explanation from Charles Martinet and Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto about why he was retiring, but that’s nowhere to be found as well.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be launching on October 20, 2023, exclusively on Nintendo Switch OLED. The game is currently available for pre-order on Nintendo’s official website and Amazon amongst other retailers. The new limited edition Mario-themed Red Nintendo Switch OLED will be launching two weeks before the game’s official launch on October 6, so be sure to cop that as well. Hence, make sure to stay tuned for more news on the game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder because we will be sure to keep you updated!
