Ghost Recon set to join the battle royale scene with Frontline

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Frontline was revealed by Ubisoft last night. It’s a new-fangled battle royale game by the first time lead developer Ubisoft Bucharest, supported by Ubisoft’s Belgrade, Craiova, Kyiv, and Odesa teams. Frontline appears to be a Ghost Recon title in name alone, as the co-op open-world tactical shooting of Wildlands and Breakpoint — two games Ubisoft Bucharest worked on previously — have been traded in for a new take on the battle royale genre. The first-person shooter free-to-play title will boast 100+ player matches — with full cross-play on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, and on PC — duking it out on the map of Drakemoor Island. The main mode you will be playing is apparently called Expedition, in which each three-person squad will “complete dynamic objectives across the massive open map with no converging circle. Once players are done collecting intel, they will have to head to a drop zone and call for an extraction. When initiated, all teams will know the position of the extraction and will try to intervene, players will have to play tactically to successfully escape and win the match.”One of the selling points to Ubi’s tactical military series has been customisability with bespoke weaponry and gadgets for the task at hand. In Frontline, there is a class system in place: short-range Assault, the Support calls with fortifications (seen at 1.11 in the trailer), and a Scout class for those long-range engagements. If you start out with the wrong gear, you can swap out between moments of combat. The reaction online has been heated, with a huge dislike ratio on the YouTube trailer and complaints about the new direction of the highly tactical series on Reddit. There are plenty of first-class memes in the thread if that is your scene. Without much attachment to the series in the TA team, it looks like an interesting enough concept and we will get a hands-on as soon as possible! There is also a chance for European players on PC to play open beta from 14th October to 21st October by signing up on the Frontline website. What do you think of the trailer? Are you also unhappy with the BR direction? Or perhaps you are happy just to have a new BR to break up the Warzone/Apex circle?
