While The Texas Chain Saw Massacre shares a similar asymmetrical multiplayer design as Gun Interactive’s Friday the 13th: The Game, the publisher says its previous horror game was “inherently more complicated than it is with Texas,” so we shouldn’t expect a similar outcome this time around. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre gameplay trailerFriday the 13th: The Game had a fairly rocky time following its launch in 2017, which saw Gun Interactive shut down its dedicated servers in 2020. The game has remained playable via peer-to-peer Quick Play and Private Matches, however, but all of that will come to an end on December 31, 2023, when Friday the 13th: The Game is delisted from the Xbox Store. When speaking to PCGamesN, Gun Interactive’s creative director Ronnie Hobbs says that The Texas Chain Saw Massacre should be free from such complications, as the developer has worked closely with franchise creator Kim Henkel. “The situation surrounding Friday the 13th was inherently more complicated than it is with Texas,” Hobbs said. “With Texas, we are dealing directly with Kim Henkel, the sole owner of the IP. We’ve been working closely with him during the entire process not only from a creative standpoint, but also a legal one. We have been as diligent as possible during this entire experience to ensure things go smoothly.”The asymmetrical multiplayer horror gameplay found in Friday the 13th: The Game turned out to be a pretty successful concept, so it’s no surprise that this next game is following suit — but it’s throwing in three murderous maniacs for good measure! Hobbs says that “a lot of potential suitors” contacted Gun to turn their IPs into games, but following an introduction to Henkel, the team “quickly knew Texas was going to be our next project.”Hobbs also says that “having the game set a few months before the original 1974 film allows us to create new characters without being bound too tightly by the entire franchise,” before later adding: “As things move forward, we hope to expand out if possible […] Film rights are obviously a complicated aspect to navigate.” The Texas Chain Saw Massacre launches on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One on Friday, August 18, and is one of the games coming to Game Pass this month.
