You can meet many companions in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, few are as fierce (or likable) as Karlach. This Tiefling has emerged stronger after years of battling the denizens of hellish Avernus, and yet she’s kept her bubbly personality. Our guide discusses how you can recruit Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3. Soon, you’ll see enemies driven before you and hear their lamentations because of this woman.
How to Recruit Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3
Where to Find Karlach
The Baldur’s Gate 3 Karlach recruitment method happens early on during Act 1. After taking out the scouting party assaulting the Druid Grove, you’ll want to keep going west. Cross the stone bridge and head north instead of entering the Blighted Village. You’ll arrive at a clearing, which has a dog that you can pet and send to your camp.
Further north is a river, which has several rocks that you can jump on. Once you’ve crossed said river, go east and check out the end of the pathway. There, you’ll see Karlach burning with the flames of hell. The coordinates are X: -104; Y: 520.
Note that you must have an available slot in your party so Karlach can join up. If you don’t, she’ll run to the location of a battle, and she’ll be an AI-controlled NPC for the fight.
How to Beat Anders
Karlach’s quest, Hunt the Devil, requires you to eliminate Anders and his “fake” Paladins. They’re actually followers of the devil Zariel. You’ll find them in a building in the Risen Road but, before you talk to Anders, we suggest repositioning your party. Make sure everyone is ungrouped and do the following:
- While still outside, climb to the top of the building and enter the balcony area. Don’t make Karlach move down too early.
- Have one melee character standing close to Anders.
- Have another melee character next to the Halfing Ranger.
- Your spellcaster has to be further away in one corner of the room.
Have Karlach climb down the ladder only once you’re done preparing. Once Anders spots her, the dialogue gets triggered and you’d have to attack. Since you’ve positioned your characters, you should be able to take out Anders and his cohorts easily enough. This bout nets you the Sword of Justice, Anders’ weapon. There’s also a Soul Coin on a shelf in the adjacent room.
Karlach’s Fiery Feature
Now that you’ve officially recruited Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3, you’ll be able to make use of her abilities. As a Barbarian, she relies on Rage generation to build up her DPS, with powerful strikes that can deal a ton of damage.
Moreover, after the battle, Karlach will start running all over the place. The fires of hell are burning her, and she has to let off some steam. To alleviate this, you need to look for Infernal Iron, as well as a Tiefling that might know a thing or two about engineering. You can learn more in our Karlach romance guide.
Additionally, Karlach and Wyll have some history, and the two will almost come to blows. Try to prevent the two from fighting to gain a lot of approval from your other companions. Lastly, make sure you save the Tiefling refugees in the Druid Grove. Going the other route, just so you could romance Minthara, is a bad idea. That will actually cause both Karlach and Wyll to leave your party for good.
In any case, that’s all you need to know about how to recruit Karlach in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can learn about the other unique characters in our companion recruitment guide.
