Subclass and features
The best subclass for Wizard is Evocation School.
While the Abjuration School subclass feature of summoning a Ward may sound attractive at first, the truth is that the Ward itself is not very powerful, and casting Abjuration spells are not used as often as other spell types. That’s why the Evocation School is the way to go. Evocation School Wizards will cast powerful spells that gather the strength and energy of the elementals.
This way, you will cast as much damage as possible, while also making use of its Sculpt Spells passive ability.
Here are the default initial Evocation spells:
- Ray of Sickness – Fire a sickening energy beam that can potentially poison your target (18m range).
- Feather Fall – While becoming immune to falling damage, the Wizards cause their allied targets to slow their rate of descents.
Abilities
Here are the best stats for Wizard:
- 8-10 Strength
- 15-16 Dexterity
- 14-15 Constitution
- 16 Intelligence
- 10 Wisdom

The main stat for Wizards is intelligence. It measures mental acuity, recall accuracy, and the ability to reason. Intelligence is used as the metric that determines the Wizard’s spell accuracy. Since the Wizard lacks armor capabilities, dexterity will provide the protection that armor sets won’t. For that same reason, constitution will increase your Wizard’s survivability.
Best races
Here are the best races for the Wizard:
- High Elf – The High Elf’s stat bonus gives +1 intelligence and +2 dexterity, making it the perfect race for stat bonus purposes. Darkvision will allow your Wizard to see in the dark (12m), Fey Ancestry will give you a bonus on saving throws against being charmed, and you will have an extra cantrip at your disposal.
