The PS5 is officially the fastest-selling PlayStation console in the UK, reaching over 1 million units sold just 39 weeks after launch. The new record is three weeks faster than the previous sales record held by the PS4.For the past year, Sony has been determined to break its own console sales record, stating in June that it plans to break 22.6 million units sold worldwide—a record originally set by the PlayStation back in 1998. The company has already acquired the number of chipsets required to break the record and plans to sell at least 14.8 million units by the end of the fiscal year.So far, Sony’s plans seem to be going well. Earlier this month, it reported that PS5 sales in Japan reached 1 million units, similarly breaking the previous record held by the PS4 by several weeks. It’s no surprise that the PS5 is also doing well in the UK, considering it was the country’s biggest console launch and broke sales records in Europe. Doubly impressive, considering the global shortage in semiconductors and a consistent shortage in consoles at physical retailers. While the PS5 was initially lagging in sales until July, Gamesindustry.biz reports that over 151,000 consoles were sold in August alone with the PS5 dominating the market. Similarly, PS5 and PlayStation exclusive games have also been performing fairly well at UK retailers, with games such as Deathloop, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart taking over last week’s top 10 physical sales charts. The PS5 has also performed significantly well in the United States thanks in part to the recent release of Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut, which took first place in the August 2021 sales charts. Ghost of Tsushima also helped the PS5 maintain its sales lead in the US, for which it also currently holds the record for fastest-selling PlayStation console. Sony CEO Jim Ryan is planning to hold a presentation on the future of the PlayStation brand next month in London.[Source: Gamesindustry.biz]
