Next year’s Call of Duty game will be Modern Warfare 2, a sequel to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. That’s according to a leak from insider Tom Henderson which VGC later corroborated. “It looks like Call of Duty: 2022 is codenamed, Project Cortez.” Henderson tweeted. “It’s expected to be a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019.” Project Cortez was spotted in the list of leaked titles found in the Nvidia GeForce Now datamine earlier this week, which also lists Infinity Ward as the developer. According to VGC, who has spoken to sources with knowledge of Activision’s plans, the sequel will feature a campaign that involves US special forces fighting against Colombian drug cartels. Eurogamer’s sources also back up VGC’s report, saying that Project Cortez is “apparently a reference to the Colonel Felix Cortez character from 1994 action thriller Clear and Present Danger.”Call of Duty: Modern Warfare launched in 2019, which means if the reports are accurate, Infinity Ward has had three years to work on its sequel.Activision recently announced its next entry into the franchise, Call of Duty: Vanguard, which is being developed by Sledgehammer Games and launches on November 5th.
