This year’s World Championship is headed to Iceland after plans in China fell through.
Today, LoL Esports announced that Worlds 2021 will be held in Reykjavík, Iceland at the Laugardalshöll indoor sporting arena. This is the same place that this year’s Mid-Season Invitational was held. The news comes after a brief period of radio silence from Riot Games, as they announced that they would be changing the venue from China to Europe a couple of weeks ago.

The change in locale to Iceland makes sense, considering that during MSI, they were able to put on the event without any players or staff catching COVID-19. Though it’s important to note, that was without live spectators. Unfortunately, Worlds 2021 will follow suit, as they’ve already made the call not to host a live audience. This is totally necessary to ensure the safety of all involved. But still a little disappointing for fans who may have wanted to attend and feel the energy in person.
Along with the announcement, they’ve set the competition’s dates too. The action starts from October 5-9 with the Play-ins Stage. Then, the main Group Stage will take place from October 11-18, with a brief break in-between. After that, the Knockout Stage beings with Quarterfinals from October 22-25, and the Semifinals from October 30-31. Finally, the climax of the event, the Grand Finals, will be held on November 6.
With the teams heading to Iceland now, all that’s left is to wait. For LoL fans around the world, Worlds is the most exciting time of the year, and will be very much looking forward to seeing the teams clash in Iceland!
