Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian named redshirt freshman Hudson Card as the team’s starting quarterback.
The Texas Longhorns are entering their first season without Sam Ehlinger starting under center, as he was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts. The team moved on from Tom Herman as head coach and effectively replaced him with Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian, who had to make the important decision as to who will start the season as the team’s No. 1 quarterback.
According to Horns247, Sarkisian has named redshirt freshman Hudson Card as the team’s starting quarterback for their season-opener against Louisiana. Card edged out redshirt junior Casey Thompson for the job, as Sarkisian informed both quarterbacks on Friday night.
Is Hudson Card the right choice to start for Texas?
The short answer to this question is yes. Card has far more upside and is the more consistent signal caller. Chip Brown of Horns 247 writes in his article that Card protected the football better than Thompson, who had troubles with interceptions in camp early on.
Even though Thompson may not be receiving the starter reps for the season opener against the Ragin’ Cajuns, Sarkisian did inform him that he will play in the game, per Horns247. So the door is open for Thompson to take over the starting offense if Card were to struggle.
Card is a four-star prospect, where he is ranked as the second-best dual threat quarterback and seventh-best recruit in Texas in the 2020 recruiting class, according to 247Sports. The quarterback did see playing time in two games with the Longhorns last year, where he rushed for 11 yards on four carries.
For Longhorns fans who were wondering who would be Ehlinger’s successor at Texas, it is Hudson Card.
