Jimbo Fisher has found his quarterback and it’s Haynes King who takes over for the departed Kellen Mond as the starter for the Aggies.

Who replaces Kellen Mond as the starting quarterback for the Texas A&M Aggies was one of the biggest questions in the SEC this offseason, and certainly, the biggest question facing Jimbo Fisher.

Now, we have the answer.

Redshirt freshman, Haynes King was named the starter on Wednesday morning with Fisher making the announcement public on ESPN 97.5. King and his family found out the news on Tuesday.

King was the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback recruit coming out of Longview high school in Longview, Texas where his father John King was his head coach.

Haynes King beat out Zach Calzada for Texas A&M football quarterback job

The 6-foot-3, 200-pound King beat out Zach Calzada who put up a great fight for the job throughout the spring, summer and fall portion of camp. In the end, Fisher and Texas A&M were won over by King’s dual-threat ability and his upside.

Texas A&M may be the team best positioned to challenge Alabama for the SEC West crown. After rising to the top-five last year behind the play of Mond under center, the Aggies are hoping that wasn’t a one-year fluke and was the start of something special under Fisher in College Station.

With King taking the starting quarterback job, his performance and leadership will go a long way toward determining the fate of Texas A&M football this year and in the short future.
