The college basketball transfer portal is changing the sport’s landscape. Minnesota, Georgia, Utah, Florida, Arizona and Auburn were affected the most.

The college basketball transfer portal has dramatically changed. Players who transfer no longer have to sit out a year before being eligible to play at their new school. The prevailing theory was that this change would cause free agency and we would see record numbers of basketball players changing schools.

Did a lot more men’s basketball players enter the 2021 transfer portal compared to previous years?

Yes, yes they did. According to NCAA.com, there were 689 transfers in 2017, 704 in 2018 and 694 in 2019. The 2021 transfer portal currently has 1,573 players listed. Almost half of the 753 players have not yet found a new place to play.

Let’s take a look at the schools that gained the most and the ones who lost the most in college basketball’s first year of “free agency.”
