The Callisto Protocol’s universe has been designed to allow for Striking Distance Studios to not only expand it with DLC, but to also give the team a way of creating additional modes. As we revealed in yesterday’s The Callisto Protocol interview about Striking Distance Studios’ reasons for not adding the game to this year’s Xbox Game Pass lineup, our trip to Gamescom gave us the opportunity to ask the developer’s chief technical officer Mark James a few questions about the upcoming horror game. Our conversation took us to the realms of DLC, as well as the potential for additional modes for The Callisto Protocol as it has been left “expandable.”The Callisto Protocol could receive additional modes in the futureThe Callisto Protocol may not be launching until December 2nd for Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, but the team at Striking Distance is already preparing for the game’s future. The developer’s CTO Mark James told us that The Callisto Protocol is seen as a “full-service title” and as a franchise, so the team is “investing in DLC support after release.””It’s really expensive to generate a new IP, so we always want to try and get the most out of it,” James told us. “We’ve left the world expandable.” Additional content for The Callisto Protocol isn’t the only thing on the cards, though, as James told us that the ‘expandable’ nature of the game’s universe can also allow for additional games in the future, if that’s something Striking Distance Studios decides to do, of course. “We’ve created a world which can tell different stories,” James explained. “We can definitely tell those stories either in DLC or we could actually tell those stories through subsequent products.” “We can see, maybe, different modes. I think we can definitely see that because at the moment we’ve got a linear story mode,” James said. We did ask whether Striking Distance Studios has considered a variation of The Callisto Protocol that features an alien petting zoo of sorts, but that was quickly shut down — perhaps we had stumbled onto a potential sequel… or you know, not. “Looking at different modes[…] we can still tell the whole story of the prison outbreak without even touching on the linear story,” James said. While the idea of a petting zoo might be out of the question as additional content, new modes and stories set within The Callisto Protocol’s universe could lead to some interesting gameplay variations, or even sequels and spin-off titles, if that’s something Striking Distance Studios decides to do in the future.
