Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has revealed that Microsoft hopes to add iconic Activision franchises Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Diablo to Xbox Game Pass should its acquisition of Activision Blizzard goes through.Following the UK’s Competition Markets Authority’s announcement that it could potentially launch a second investigation into Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard deal, Phil Spencer released a blog post detailing Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass plans and further clarifying its stance on Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles. Microsoft wants to add Call of Duty, Overwatch, and Diablo to Xbox Game Pass“We intend to make Activision Blizzard’s much-loved library of games – including Overwatch, Diablo and Call of Duty – available in Game Pass and to grow those gaming communities,” Spencer said. When the deal was first announced, Microsoft did say it wanted to bring Activision Blizzard franchises to Xbox Game Pass but stopped short of naming actual IP. Microsoft has previously stated that the Call of Duty franchise will not be an Xbox exclusive and that future entries into the series will still launch on other platforms, including PlayStation. “As we’ve said before, we are committed to making the same version of Call of Duty available on PlayStation on the same day the game launches elsewhere, Spencer said. “We will continue to enable people to play with each other across platforms and across devices. We know players benefit from this approach because we’ve done it with Minecraft, which continues to be available on multiple platforms and has expanded to even more since Mojang joined Microsoft in 2014.” The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority recently announced it had concerns surrounding Microsoft’s potential acquisition of Activision Blizzard, saying that the deal “could harm rivals, including recent and future entrants into gaming, by refusing them access to Activision Blizzard games or providing access on much worse terms.” What do you make of the CMA’s stance on this?
