One of the biggest fights that Bellator MMA has promoted — perhaps even the biggest fight in Bellator MMA history — is finally about to go down.
After starting up with an expanded field of 16, and being paused for a time due to Bellator’s shut down with the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix finally wraps up in the main event of Bellator 263.
And this main event gifts us a highly-anticipated featherweight world title fight between defending champion Patricio “Pitbull” Freire and undefeated challenger AJ McKee.
Freire’s current reign as featherweight champ began with a win over Daniel Straus at Bellator 178 — and he added lightweight gold with his 61-second finish of Michael Chandler at Bellator 221. Freire, one of the faces of Bellator for about a decade, became the second champ-champ in promotion history.
Freire’s Grand Prix experience thus far has seen him retain the featherweight title with a decision over Juan Archuleta, a knockout of Pedro Carvalho and a submission of Emmanuel Sanchez.
McKee, a second-generation MMA talent has been a staple of Bellator MMA since his professional MMA debut in 2015, slowly but surely rising up to his contender status.
McKee’s road to the finals has seen him knock out Georgi Karakhanyan in eight seconds, submit Derek Campos and submit Darrion Caldwell, the latter of which earned him Submission of the Year honors across MMA media for 2020.
