Oklahoma football head coach Brent Venables responded strongly to the resignation of wide receivers coach Cale Gundy.
On Monday, Oklahoma football wide receivers coach Cale Gundy resigned after uttering a racial slur while reading off of a screen in front of players while reciting a social media post.
The news has garnered much attention across the college football landscape, and Sooners head coach Brent Venables has stepped in and released a statement on the matter.
More importantly, the statement iterates that Gundy said the slur “multiple times” in front of his players while reading off of the screen, which refutes Gundy’s statement he made as he resigned, which indicated he said the slur once and hinted at not realizing what he’d said.
“Coach Gundy resigned from the program because he knows what he did was wrong. He chose to read aloud to his players, not once but multiple times, a racially charged word that is objectionable to everyone… This is not acceptable. Period.”
Venables makes a valid point. Though his intentions may not have been malicious, and this could have been a one-time incident, it does not change the fact that the action was committed and the program needs to move on.
Oklahoma football: Brent Venable releases strong statement on Cale Gundy resignation
Though Venables is in his first season as head coach, it’s hard not to miss that Gundy was the longest-tenured member of the Oklahoma coaching staff having served under former coaches Bob Stoops and Lincoln Riley. Additionally, Gundy has seen the growth of several prominent wide receivers in his tenure, including Hollywood Brown and CeeDee Lamb.
Nonetheless, his time in Norman is done, and the team is looking to move forward. It was reported that offensive analyst L’Damian Washington would take over as interim coach until the program finds someone else to firmly secure that role. What happens to Gundy, however, remains to be seen.
Venables’ account of the matter in his statement paints a different picture of what happened with Gundy, which adds a layer to the complicated matter in Norman.
