Continuing its pioneering efforts set with last year’s Axon 20 5G, ZTE has just announced its second-gen under-display camera smartphone – the Axon 30 5G. A year’s worth of change brings upgrades across the board and most importantly in the UD camera and display.

The 10bit AMOLED panel on the Axon 30 comes in at a sizeable 6.92-inches, packing a 120Hz refresh rate and FHD+ resolution. The 16MP UD camera and display area above it have been completely reworked featuring rearranged pixels with higher transparency cathodes. ZTE doubled the ppi count above the camera module to 400ppi up from 200ppi on the Axon 20.

The display features a 7-layer structure including higher transmittance materials, an all-new UDC Pro screen display chip and an ACE circuit arrangement. ZTE claims these advancements get more light to the camera sensor resulting in improved image clarity compared to last year’s solution. The camera uses a 4-in-1 binning process capturing 2.24um equivalent pixels.

Around the back the Axon 30 brings a 64MP Sony IMX682 main sensor alongside an 8MP ultrawide camera, a 5MP macro shooter and a depth lens. There’s a Snapdragon 870 chipset sitting at the helm aided by 6/8/12GB RAM and up to 256GB UFS 3.1 storage. The battery capacity comes in at 4200mAh and you get speedy 55W wired charging. ZTE’s MyOS 11 on top of Android 11 covers the software front.

Axon 30 5G comes in black and green colors. Pricing in China starts at CNY 2,198 ($338) for the 6/128GB model and goes up to CNY 3,098 ($476) for the 12/256GB trim. First sales start on August 3. ZTE confirmed Axon 30 5G is coming to the global market but will detail pricing and availability at a later point in time.
