The Chicago White Sox have been atrocious and it has caused strife in the clubhouse and in the managerial office. If Tony La Russa is fired, here are three possible replacements for him.
Tony La Russa is a Hall of Fame manager. But after not managing for a decade, he decided to come back to where it all started: the Chicago White Sox. They reached the playoffs this year but the team has been an unmitigated disaster this year, as they are four games under .500 through 86 games.
A lot of it has to do with some of the asinine managerial moves that La Russa has made and the clubhouse.
Either during this season or after the season, the White Sox should make a move at manager. Here are three candidates to replace La Russa.
White Sox managerial candidates to replace Tony La Russa
1. Ozzie Guillen
It has been a while since Ozzie Guillen has managed in the majors, like La Russa, but for Guillen, things would be much different.
Guillen managed the White Sox from 2004 through 2011, winning the White Sox only World Series title since 1919 in 2005. He went 678-617 in his parts of eight seasons there before going to the Marlins, where the team fell flat, going 69-93 under Guillen’s lone season.
But Guillen, 58, is younger than La Russa, who turns 78 in October. In fact, Guillen played for La Russa in 1985 in his rookie season before La Russa was fired by the White Sox mid-season.
He is from Venezuela and is a native Spanish speaker, which would help him connect with players from Latin America.
Most importantly, he is already familiar with the current roster. He is a pre- and post-game analyst for the team on TV so he understands what the strengths and weaknesses of the team are already.
