With the possibility of Marcus Williams leaving the New Orleans Saints next season, three rival teams could use his services.

NFL teams had until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement with their franchise-tagged players. Unfortunately for the New Orleans Saints, they couldn’t get a deal done with their tagged player, Marcus Williams. The two sides were in heavy negotiations, but they couldn’t come to a resolution. As a result, he’ll play this upcoming season on the franchise tag, but he could become a free agent next offseason.

Williams has proven to be an above-average safety and could be in for a big payday in 2022. Unfortunately, the Saints might not have the financial flexibility to offer him the contract he wants, opening the door for other rival teams to steal him away from them. Three teams, in particular, could snatch Williams, and his presence could really help their team.

If the Saints aren’t careful, they could lose their prized safety to a division rival. The Carolina Panthers have had a strong offseason, but they still didn’t address their need at safety. So it makes sense for them to wait until the end of the season and see if Williams becomes available. Getting him will cost them a pretty penny, which means they’ll have to work out the finances when the time comes.

In the Panthers 3-3-5 scheme under Eric Snow, Williams will be a nice fit. His versatility would be perfect, as Carolina can use him as a roaming defender. He can be in the box or play back in coverage. Additionally, his presence will be great for young secondary players like Jaycee Horn and Dante Jackson. Not to mention the Panthers will benefit from having the knowledge of a former Saints player to get the advantage in division matchups.

If the money works and Williams is available, the Panthers need to make an effort to sign him. He’ll be a great addition to a team that needs a veteran presence in their secondary. Carolina should keep a close eye on Marcus Williams’ situation, especially if things fall apart between him and the Saints.
