World War II and RTS games have always gone together perfectly. We’ve got Company of Heroes, Men of War, and Steel Division 2 to name a few. Back in 2004, however, we had Soldiers: Heroes of World War II. This epochal strategy game helped pioneer the modern RTS as we know it today, but in the last 20 years, it’s gone largely unloved. Until now that is. Both Best Way and Fulqrum Publishing have just released a game-changing and modernizing update for Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, making the last two decades seem like nothing.

Taking control of either British, American, Russian, or German forces, Soldiers: Heroes of World War II thrusts you into one of history’s most intense theaters of war. Every single infantryman is an invaluable resource, so you need to keep each soldier alive. Fights utilize close combat tactics, with cover and positioning playing a huge role in victory. You can even take command of each soldier directly, giving you complete control over your troops on the battlefield. If that sounds like an RTS game that’s right up your street, this new update is a game-changer.

The latest patch for Soldiers: Heroes of World War II makes an array of sweeping improvements that modernize the classic RTS. The game suddenly has Steam Workshop support, which means you can upload and download mods made for the game right from Valve’s platform. Best Way and Fulqrum Publishing have also added Steam achievements and stats support, with mission achievements also planned.

Your experience with Soldiers: Heroes of World War II is also going to look a lot nicer than it did 20 years ago, thanks to this update. The game now has 4K upscaling, widescreen, V-Sync, and DirectX 9 support – making Soldiers feel like a modern game. Aspect ratios across mission intros, loading screens, and other similar events have also been fixed, so you’ll no longer have stretched-out or squashed screens when playing.

The multiplayer experience in Soldiers: Heroes of World War II has also been completely overhauled, making it much easier to play the game with friends. Best Way and Fulqrum Publishing have added Steam network multiplayer support, friends integration, and even improved the game’s overall netcode. According to the Soldiers: Heroes of World War II Steam page, the game’s multiplayer was restricted to LAN sessions (unless you use third-party software), but now playing online is much easier.

The new Soldiers: Heroes of World War II patch is available on Steam now, alongside an 85% discount. You can expect to pay $0.74 / £0.64 until Monday January 27. The Steam page is right here.

If you want even more, we also have all the best WW2 games, and even the best turn-based strategy games as well.
